How do I Protect My Mattress from Bugs?

Bed bugs are tiny, red colored insects that love dingy and dark environments such as your mattress. They hide and lay their eggs in the seams of the mattress during sunlight, only to come out at night and feed on your blood. Once infested, these bed bugs are really hard to get rid of. With that being said, it is always best to be prepared and prevent your mattress from bed bug infestation.

King Koil, one of the best mattress companies in India, offers premium mattresses in all ranges. To help protect a high quality mattress, this blog will list down several steps you can take to prevent and eliminate bed bugs.  But, first, let’s take a look at some of the signs that are a sure-shot tell that these pesky bugs have made your mattress a home for themselves.

Signs That Your Mattress is Bed Bug Infested

Bed bugs are fast crawlers, and it is not always too easy to spot them. However, there are a few signs that you should look out for. Keep in mind that the presence of one sign is not always a positive indicator for bed bugs, as they could be signs of some other problem. Always look for the two or more signs to confirm the presence. The signs include:

  • Live Bugs: Always not easy to see, but if you detect red or brown colored bugs that are small about the size of an apple seed, then you can be sure that those are bed bugs. The young bugs are generally white or clear.  Make sure to look in the box spring, the cracks of the bed frame and the seams and stitches of the mattress.

  • Eggs and Shell Castings: If you spot something like tiny white oval-shaped things on your mattress, then those are the eggs of the bed bugs. Another thing to look out for are shell casings or shredded skin of the bugs. These are translucent and hollow shaped that are generally present in the seams and corners of the mattress.

  • Small Blood Spots:  Small blood spots can be visible on your screen owing to the bitten part of your skin making contact with the bed.

  • Red and  Itchy Skin: Bed bug bites can lead to red or itchy skin because of skin getting irritated.

  • Odor: Bed bug infestation is generally accompanied by a foul moldy smell. It can also be due to just fungus growth, so it is always better to back up the odor with other signs of bed bugs.

Ways to Protect Your Mattress From Bed Bugs

If you fear that bed bugs have in fact taken your bed as their home, then following are some of the ways that can help you get rid of them or prevent any further infestation.

Steam Clean

Steam cleaning the mattress is a well known way to get rid of bed bugs. The high heat from the steam ensures the bugs are killed without the use of any nasty chemicals. To steam clean your mattress, all you have to do is move the steamer slowly over all the nooks and crannies of the mattress to effectively get all the bugs.

Vacuum

A good suction machine can help remove the bed bugs. If you suspect or see the bugs, vacuum the area thoroughly. To effectively remove the bugs, make sure to use the highest suction setting and a crevice tool attachment that will ensure the vacuuming is done in the folds and corners of the mattress. Another important thing to remember once after you are done vacuuming is to remove the vacuum bag from the house immediately and dispose off its contents away from home, so the bugs can’t reach back.

High Heat Treatment

High temperatures of over 122℉ are considered lethal for bugs. The best possible way to subject them to these temperatures is by running any bedding items like mattress covers and bedsheets through your dryer on high heat for at least half an hour. There are also portable heating devices available in the market specifically for bed bugs that you can use.

Freeze Bedding

Another way, totally opposite to the one mentioned above, is to deep freeze your clothing or bedding. For small items like bedsheets, you can put them in the freezer for a few days and for big items like mattress covers, you can leave them outside when the temperature is below freezing. Bed bugs will freeze to death this way.

Scrubbing

Take a stiff brush and use it to scrub off the seams and folds in the mattress. This way any eggs or bugs will get scraped away that might be hiding in the crevices.

Insecticides

There are many mattress-safe insecticides available in the market that help kill off these bugs for good. Spray the insecticide all  over the mattress or any furniture you feel is infested by the bugs. Make sure to get all the areas covered, top, bottom, sides, and the crevices and folds of the mattress.

Protective Mattress Cover

A basic zippered mattress cover can help you a great deal in preventing bugs. A mattress cover will slip over your mattress, covering it from all sides. A zip ensures it doesn’t get undone, risking bug infestation. Apart from keeping the bed bugs away, a mattress protector is your safeguard against spills and stains, all of which can ruin your luxury mattress.

Tidy and Clutter Free Room

Bed bugs can adjust themselves into the tiniest crack and crevice. In fact, a cluttered or unorganized bedroom often allows them to hide in it, making it very challenging to spot an infestation or to get rid of them altogether. Remove any less frequently used items in the room. Typically, these include piles of clothes, stacks of magazines, or too many furniture pieces. Clean every surface, under a bed, and behind the furniture-these are favorite habitats of bed bugs. By keeping your room clean and tidy, you tackle the infestation before it truly gets out of hand.
